The disappointment sets in pretty early on in season 2 of the critically acclaimed Hulu show “Shrill” (Starring SNL star Aidy Bryant who plays Annie Easton). Where season 1 was filled with sympathy, awkwardness, laughs and moments of pure joy and acceptance, season 2 finds a nice jogging pace into mediocrity.
Season 2 picks up where season 1 left off with Annie confronting the internet troll who has been tormenting her for months. The adrenaline rush she feels after this encounter fizzles quickly and we find ourselves accompanying her through mundane scenarios as she navigates unemployment, a new relationship and the complicated personal journey of her roommate “Fran” (played by Lolly Adefope) that at times overshadows Annie’s own personal struggles.
Although season 2 may be lacking in momentum, the cast certainly brings their A-game and that is certainly than with Aidy Bryant. Her facial expressions and timing are impeccable and the supporting cast certainly has their shining moments (although they are few and far between).
Unfortunately, it is not enough to save this season from itself. Characters we clung to for comic relief in season 1 aren’t utilized in season 2. Viewers will likely be disappointed if they hope to feel the emotion brought on by the infamous “pool party” scene in the show’s first season. This season desperately lacks a similar climax. The audience is brought along as Annie seeks self acceptance, love and career fulfillment. Unfortunately, it never feels like much weight is put into any of these areas. With all of its good qualities this season of “Shrill” still feels like filler.
