💊💊💊REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS💊💊💊

“Project Power” is an imaginative film that puts a twist on the superhero genre in a way that as not been tackled before. It brings audiences on a thrill ride of action and suspense as it begs the question we have all asked ourselves at least once… “I wonder what it would be like to have superpowers”

It takes place in a world where a black-market pill gives you a superpower for 5 minutes. You won’t know your specific superpower until you take it and there is a chance that it could kill you. Law enforcement is trying to get it off of the streets while corrupt forces within the system are working to keep it there.

Starring Jamie Foxx as “Art”, a former soldier with his own connection to the pill, as he searches for his kidnapped daughter. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays “Frank” a local cop who works tirelessly to get this pill off the streets but is mixed up with teenage dealer “Robin”, played by Dominique Fishback. “Robin” is an underdog who displays a gritty innocence as she navigates between her struggles at home and the hustle she has chosen.

This film packs a punch! It does a decent job in developing a complex story while delivering on action that often leaves the audience on the edge of their seat. It uses New Orleans as a backdrop without relying on the typical tropes and stereotypes films often do in the historic city.

Where the film could stretch its legs more is in the development of “Frank”, who we see as a passionate cop working to get this pill off the streets. However, it does not provide any insight into what brought him to the extreme measures and connections he uses to achieve that goal. A better developed backstory for this character would provide more substance for the interactions between the characters.

Netflix brings the heat with this film but some may feel that it misses an opportunity to flush out certain characters and plot points. However, if you’re looking for a wild, gritty (at times predictable) ride, then get ready because Project Power” is poised to entertain.
