“Booksmart” directed by Olivia Wilde gifts us with Amy and Molly, who have spent their entire high school career doing what has been expected of them. They followed the rules, studied hard and as a result are now graduating at the top of their class. Unfortunately, as graduation day approaches they realize they haven’t lived at all and decide to attend the “party of the year” to prove that they can also have a good time.
As per the typical teen movie formula they encounter a few hiccups on the way to the party and shenanigans ensue. Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever deliver on the laughs and beautifully pull at your heart strings in this coming-of-age comedy. Almost everyone can find representation in this movie based on friendship, identity and fitting in.

It doesn’t take long to identity the jocks, popular girls, theater kids, skaters and nerds. As with most teen movies these cliques appear to be the antithesis of our main characters for most of the movie. Until they realize they have more in common than they ever realized and new friendships are formed.

It might be hard to look past the teen movie clichés but what “Booksmart” lacks in original story telling it makes up for in other ways. You will find yourself bopping your head to the amazing soundtrack and being embarrassed for and laughing with Amy and Molly throughout the movie. This film is only highlighted by Jessica Williams (beautiful and relatable teacher) and Jason Sudeikis (funny Uber driving principal) whose comedic chops are icing on the cake.

“Booksmart” gives us a formula we are familiar with through an empowered female lens while making it feel fresh and new. Throw in some new age debauchery, vomit scenes along with an epic graduation speech and audiences are guaranteed to be satisfied!
