If you are into teen horror flicks and love the supernatural fright fest of the “Conjuring” films then this movie is for you! Do not let the repetitive and sometimes, mundane nature of the previous films in this franchise deter you. This is a freshly horrifying take on a type of horror we all THINK we know.
The Warrens (played by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson) are back and their line of work is still to help those who are affected by the supernatural. However, in this film their roles are reduced and we are following the story of their daughter “Judy” played by Mckenna Grace. When the parents leave town for the night and the babysitter (played by Madison Iseman) is left in charge, she invites her friend over and horror ensues when the spirits decide to come and play.
Directed by Gary Dauberman and written by James Wan and Gary Dauberman this is a departure from the previous films. There are higher stakes and more ghostly horror. Jump scares are plentiful and the risks taken by some of the characters will have you shaking your head and sitting at the edge of your seat.
The doll named “Annabelle” is frightening and manipulative in a way we have not seen her in previous films. She has the ability act as a conduit to bring back spirits, so past tragedies and unknown fear impact each character in a unique way.
Cons are that there is a lack of connection between this film and the others in the franchise. It is not necessary to have seen any of the other films to enjoy or understand this one and that may work as a disadvantage. You might find yourself struggling to find the connection and you would not be alone. Although this franchise had been successful making individual films with a strong following, the threads that hold them all together are often broken or frayed. It also falls short in its portrayal of a resolution, but make no mistake we have not seen the last of Annabelle.
“Annabelle Comes Home” is a strong film with lots of suspense and supernatural horror. It’s made for theaters and those watching it on the big screen will not be disappointed.
