(SPOILER ALERT)

There are many times when I look down at that $3.99 price, and I wonder why I spend my money this way.  I greatly prefer times like today.  When you see that amount, and you think to yourself how much you wish every four bucks you spent was this fuckin awesome.  Writer Jason Aaron continues part three of his quest for Nightcrawler.  Normally I am very cynical about character deaths in comic books.  But penciler Ed McGuinness is taking me back to where I want to be when I read an X book.  In issue one, we started out with Nightcrawler in heaven.  Granted an eternity in paradise for a life of heroism and faith, Nightcrawler’s afterlife was interrupted by his father, the demon Azazel, and a gang of demon pirates out to steal souls from the shores of heaven.  Kurt beat them back to the seas of oblivion, but in issue two the bamfs have teleported various X-men to different planes of the spiritual spectrum.  Wolverine and Northstar went to heaven.  Hopefully, Logan can get a good look while he has the chance.  Storm, Iceman, and Firestar went to hell where Storm was captured by more (freakin awesome) demon pirates.

This issue starts on Azazel’s ship as Beast is captured, stabbed through the back, and tossed overboard.  In the melee, Azazel reveals the flowchart for his rise to power.  On another vessel, Storm is about to have her hands cut off because no bonds can hold her.  Her captors are thwarted by the long awaited arrival of the elf who has finally been taken off the shelf.

Dexter Vines’ inking and Marte Gracia’s colors speak for themselves.  Jason Aaron takes us back in time to a quiet moment in the history of Storm and Nightcrawler.  Telling the story of the time Kurt convinced Ororo to not leave the school, we are given context for the dramatic entrance of our guest of honor.  The look on Ororo’s face is especially memorable.

The book ends with the images from the cover.  An injured and feral Hank McCoy threatening to attack a newly returned Nightcrawler.  This is quickly becoming my favorite Tupperware, and I hope you will check out the A-freakin-mazing X-men!
