The Pale Blue Eye released on Netflix and it stars Christian Bale and Harry Melling. Two actors who I’ve seen work my entire life. Christian Bale provides a serious but vulnerable role as Detective Landor while Harry Melling plays a more fun, rambunctious, and overall cunning role as E. A. Poe, as he calls himself. With these two being at the forefront, I must say I had a really pleasant experience watching this movie.

As another murder mystery story unravels in front of me with this latest rendition, I am only wondering what could this bring in terms of motive for the killer and how it will be solved. Bringing not one but two heads in on the job makes for interesting dialogue and unforgettable scenes with Melling and Bale. The only problems I really have with this film are the other characters and how the film handled their storylines or lack thereof. I felt that when our main two weren’t on the screen or engaging with each other, the movie felt super slow. It was hard to find a character to grasp onto who made you think, “could they have done it?”

With the ending we got, I will say I was surprised and thrown off, considering I felt there weren’t too many clues telling you who was at fault. I think for those that need something to watch with the main two characters showing off their talent with a backdrop of drab and dull characters, this is it. The movie is good and has a great ending but I can’t imagine revisiting the whole film but definitely watching clips.

PCL Rating: High Taste It

Rotten Tomatoes Rating: FRESH
