Evil Dead is one of the absolute greatest horror franchises ever brought to screen – dead stop. So when a new sequel was announced to be arriving ten years after the uniquely horrifying 2013 remake, I was beyond skeptical to see what Lee Cronin alongside Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi would be bringing to the table. What we received is one of the brightest and greatest revivals in horror, overflowing with gore from gruesome beginnings to its grisly finale.

Evil Dead Rise brings some brand new talent to American audiences and ultimately some, namely Alyssa Sutherland, that we can’t wait to get out of our nightmares. Drenched in blood nearly at every turn, Cronin delivers a looming doom with every shot – no one is safe when the Necronomicon has been awoken. While the story doesn’t dive deep in the mythos like a few of the movies of the past, the simplicity engineers a dark narrative that allows new frights to manifest.

When it comes to the likes of our misunderstood hero, from Ash to Mia and now to Beth; Bruce Campbell’s iconic Ash Williams is a legend in horror, Jane Levy’s Mia brought devastation to an addict that must learn to quite literally fight her demons to stay alive and Lily Sullivan’s Beth is simply here to kick some deadite ass while being a badass aunt. While nothing beats the likes of Ash, Beth is similarly an ordinary survivor who has to transform into a hero by film’s end to survive the night.

For those unsettled by intense goretastic sequences with literal body parts being dismantled before your eyes, this latest horror may be an experience to hold off on. Evil Dead Rise is blood-soaked nightmare fuel that’ll truly fuck up some and deservingly be celebrated by the horror community. A seamless entry into the Evil Dead universe, that continues the franchise’s hot streak that’s lasted more than 40 years.
