So while listening to the most recent Pop Culture Leftovers Podcast Episode 61: The Crossover, Brian brought up there might be another Death Star. I happened to remember reading Star Wars: The Jedi Academy trilogy by Kevin J Anderson. Really one of my all time favorite story lines in the expanded universe.

Most of us fans know that the expanded universe has been deemed not cannon. Fair enough considering Disney wants to be able to tell their own stories but have the right to pick and choose what characters they feel worthy to use.

I will drop a little knowledge for those who don’t know The Jedi Academy. It takes place 7 years after Return of the Jedi and Luke is attempting to rebuild the Jedi Order by training Force sensitive beings he, with the help of Lando, 3PO and R2 has located throughout the galaxy. Han and Chewbacca have been taken prisoner and sent to the spice mines of Kessel. The academy is set up on Yavin 4, the original Rebel base in A New Hope. Han and Chewie obviously has escaped and stolen an Empire doomsday weapon.

One of Luke’s apprentices dabbles with the Dark Side and accidentally sets free an “ancient evil” master of the Dark Side spirit Exar Kun. Kyp Durron who was freed by Han from the spice mines, is now being trained by Luke. Exar lures Kyp to the Dark Side and tricks him to assault Luke.

After a battle for Luke’s life where the remaining students battle Exar and Kyp and briefly bring Kyp back to the Light Side Kyp steals the doomsday weapon dubbed the Sun Crusher to go find his brother who is rumored to be with the imperials only to be told he has died. Kyp loses it and blows up a star killing his brother in the process. Kyp falls further into madness vowing to destroy the rest of the imperials and any planets the May be on.

Kyp is eventually brought back to the Light Side with help of Han and Leia’s twins Jaina and Jacen but remains shunned by many for his rampage through the Galaxy and all seems back to normal.

Great trilogy, really fun read and loaded with inspiration.

When Brian brought up another Death Star during the Star Wars news segment of the PCL podcast I felt it was a little too repetitive but what if they borrowed some academy themes for the upcoming trilogy. It would make sense with Luke being portrayed in a hermit like state and rumors linking an ancient evil and Luke being turned to the Dark Side and a Death Star like weapon. No reason they can’t tweak it or change it to add new characters to make it their own cannon.

Just a theory and would be a great nod to the EU fans while not necessarily crapping all over what many grew up believing was cannon.

Thoughts, disagreements or counterpoints more than welcomed.

There is a small plot that I do consider to be canon even if as only a foot note, but there were a total of 3 death stars. The Yavin Death Star, the Endor Death Star, and a third Death Star which I believe was hidden in or near the Maw Cluster. It was actually the first, a prototype that was never completed
