**SPOILERS**
In this latest movie in the MCU (directed by Jon Watt), Peter Parker (played by Tom Holland) is living in a post “Endgame” world, which is proving to be more difficult than he anticipated. It has been 8 months since his mentor Tony Stark (i.e. Iron Man) has died and the world is looking for the person who will take his place. Peter has been through a lot and is wondering if he just wants to be a normal teenager. That pressure, along with Peter’s feelings for MJ (played by Zendaya) have given him a lot to think about. This film follows Peter and his classmates on a trip to Europe with 2 hilariously oblivious teachers (played by Martin Starr and J.B. Smoov). Antics with classmates ensue, as Peter must fight danger while keeping his Spider-Man identity a secret.
Enter Quentin Beck i.e. “Mysterio” (played by Jake Gyllenhaal), a superhero from another dimension, who has traveled to Earth to fight creatures known as “Elementals”. However, things are not as they seem and Peter makes a mistake that could potentially cause a lot of damage.
As the first MCU film released after “Avengers: Endgame”, “Spider-Man: Far From Home” does a great job at addressing the impact of the events of Tony Stark’s death and the final snap. With each character dealing with it in a unique way, it doesn’t feel heavy handed or as though it is trying to explain those events to the audience again. Action sequences are top notch and will certainly leave the audience amazed at all of the cool effects.
Where this film falls short is in its inability to separate Peter from Tony Stark. Tony Stark references may illicit an initial emotional response from the audience, however those references very quickly evolve into comparisons between Peter and Tony. It then seems that because of those similarities that Peter is being groomed to take Iron Man’s place. Keeping Spider-Man a local “friendly neighborhood” super-hero is part of his appeal to many who love this character and the comics. This movie flirts a little too much with the idea that he may have outgrown that role.
This film is a great bridge out of “Endgame” and into the next phase of the MCU. Stick around for the post credit scenes (there are 2) because they are more impactful than those we have seen in the past and will have you craving the next MCU film sooner rather than later.

PCL Rating: High Taste It
