LuLa Rich Docuseries Review by Brooke Daugherty (Amazon Prime Video)

The billion dollar clothing empire LuLaRoe stand accused of misleading thousands of women with their multi-level marketing platform.

When I saw Amazon Video was doing a docuseries about LulaRoe, I knew I would watch it. I knew it
would probably show an even worse side of the company than I imagined. What I didn’t know is it
would maintain a fairly balanced overview. This documentary not only talked to those scorned by
LulaRoe, but people who still work for the company. Neither shed good light on the batshit crazy
owners.

Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughby Nason both directed and produced the series. They interviewed
former employees, the owners (Deanne Brady and Mark Stidham), experts, lawyers, and some
salespeople who are still with the company. Honestly, it didn’t change my mind about the company, but
it did keep the documentary from being too one sided. We see proof of the moldy leggings and hear
from a designer about the wacky patterns. My favorite part (sarcasm) has to be the depositions of
Brady, Stidham, and their high level employees employed by nepotism.

Amazon calls this “Season 1” which leaves open for it to return. This season brought up some things
that could have been dealt with a couple more episodes, not a whole season. The fact the owners were
Mormon and how their religion tied into how it affected the business. Former employees also bring up
fat shaming by Deanne and that itself could have been a whole episode.

I don’t buy into “multi-level marketing” schemes, but I have been known to buy things from my poor
friends who think working with a MLM equates to owning their own business. As I type this, I am
wearing LulaRoe leggings. I stopped buying LulaRoe just before the shit hit the fan. Anyway, I enjoyed
this series.\
