As a life long Godzilla fan, I have seen all sorts of different movies from the King of the Monsters: from horror to comedy, family life lessons and environmentalism. And as I have grown older, as many do, we become more cynical and critical of what we see on screen. But that being said, I was caught off guard. This film turned back time over 20 years for me and I was a child again being exposed to a whole new world of action and excitement!

The majesty of these iconic kaiju was brought to the screen in full by director Michael Dougherty’s fantastic vision. Every step from a Titan feels like an earthquake. Every movement holds the weight and power that these legendary beasts should have. Combined with amazing cgi effects and a world class musical score by Bear McCreary, combining new music and giving amazing new versions of classic Ifukube tracks, and you have a recipe for some of the most amazing kaiju action every put to the screen.
The effects and action alone are more than worth the cost of a ticket. This movie took me back to my childhood in a way that re-watching any other Godzilla movie, new or old, cannot do. I was full of joy and awe as these Gods battled for supremacy. And the human story, while at times too slow and confusing, was still interesting for me. Ken Watanabe still brings his gravitas as Dr. Ishiro Serizawa, and continues to be my avatar for this world; feeling the same sense of admiration for these creatures from a long past time…where the Earth shook in their mere presence.

With a great sense for action, a clear love for the source material, and plenty of nostalgia bits for long time fans throughout the movie, Godzilla King of the Monsters is an instant classic in the historic and very long history of the franchise. At least… so says this Kaiju Groupie. Long Live the King!
