An in-depth look at Hollywood’s depiction of transgender people and the impact of those stories on transgender lives and American culture.

Disclosure showed at Sundance in January of 2020 to positive reviews prompting Netflix to acquire the rights. It is an emotional documentary everyone should see. Directed by Sam Feder and Executive Produced by Laverne Cox, Disclosure gives a view of Transgender lives both on and off screen including behind the scenes throughout the entire production.

This documentary gives an indepth look at Transgender people in media. We see just how far we have come, but in many places, still have much farther to go to show Trans lives as they are, not the butt of a joke or a plot twist. Laverne Cox, Chaz Bono, and Lilly Wachowski are among those interviewed in the film. Lilly, who is more reclusive than her sister, reveals the character of Nomi Marks from sense8 was who she aspired to be.

I found this documentary to be emotional and educational. I didn’t realize 80% of people don’t know someone who is transgender. I suggest checking out the work of all those involved in Disclosure to get a better idea of the trans experience.

This is a film about Trans stories, but I stand by my statement that everyone should watch it. So many times, cisgender people see themselves represented don’t always understand how important it is for everyone to see that on screen. I feel it is also important to see unfavorable depictions to create a dialog about why it is damaging. For anyone thinking this is some “PC bullshit”, I implore you to watch to see these artists, educators, and activists as what they are first and foremost–people.
