“Charlie’s Angels” Review by Brooke Daugherty

When I heard there would be a new Charlie’s Angels movie, I wasn’t impressed. I never was a huge fan
of the early aughts movies. Cameron Diaz can be too much for me, not to mention Drew Barrymore’s
odd way of speaking, leaving Lucy Liu as the best part for me. But when I heard Elizabeth Banks would
not only star in, but also write AND direct the new film, I was in.
Once the movie gets in the first 10 or 15 minutes, you realize this can be a sequel, not necessarily a
reboot. We find out the Townsend Agency has expanded across the globe since the last film. Yes,
Banks plays Bosley, but it has become a title for the role John Bosley filled in the original series as well
as the films. We have Sir Patrick Stewart playing the original Bosley, the global outreach could explain
why he wasn’t again portrayed by Bill Murray and still keep it in the universe.
The other big names include Djimon Hounsou also as Bosley and Kristen Stewart as “Angel” Sabina.
Stewart’s appearances can be divisive, but I’m here to tell you, she was amazing-I think I have a new
crush/mood/aesthetic. Ella Balinska plays Jane, former MI-6 agent turned Angel, appeared in several
British titles I recognized but never have seen. After Charlie’s Angels, I think she should do more action
movies. Rounding out the cast is Naomi Scott as Elena. If you are Millenial and/or have children, you’ve
probably seen her in the most recent Power Rangers movie or the live action Aladdin. Charlie’s Angels
falls somewhere between action and great costumes of those two films. Her performance as a scientist
on the run under Angel protection, is believable. Something that doesn’t always happen when beautiful
women play scientists.
This is a great popcorn flick with awesome fight scenes as wells as uplifting female relationships. I
would absolutely watch this again before many other blockbusters. Banks put in enough twists and
turns to keep the plot from becoming too boring or predictable. (Yes, there is some predictability, but
take a look at every Fast & Furious movie.)
It is true this film hasn’t done well at the box office, but I don’t think it is fully due to being female led as
Elizabeth Banks recently stated. I feel part had to do with this exhausted franchise. Although the TV
show lasted five seasons, it lost viewers every year for the last three. The 2000 and 2003 films did well
and were fun romps, and this wasn’t marketed as a sequel, adding to the reboot fatigue. Finally, Kristen
Stewart is mostly known as “that twilight girl”, but she can be a good actress at times. For a movie that
rivals her hotness in Charlie’s Angels, I suggest you see her as Joan Jett in Runaways.
Did we need another Charlie’s Angels?  No. Did Elizabeth Banks write and direct a fun film with lots of
action with some twists. Yes. Should you see it? Yes. Highest of Taste Its

PCL Rating: High Taste It

Rotten Tomatoes Rating: FRESH 🍅
