RATINGS SYSTEM
Toss It = Hated It
Taste It = Liked It
Tupperware = Loved It
The taste of disappointment still lingering from Batman v Superman didn’t make me overly excited for Captain America Civil War. A little over a month from the American release I hear that they are going to be doing screenings and they are welcoming spoiler free reviews. No studio does that unless they are supremely confident in that movie. This coupled with incredible trailers (which is not odd by itself as Marvel knows how to cut a trailer and not necessarily deliver on said trailer) got me a little more excited. The reviews that come out sing it praises and I’m now excited.

From the second it began to the second it ended there could not be a higher Tupperware. Yes even the credits because I noticed that Private Dan West was in the credits for being the C Second Camera Assistant on the filming in Germany. Fucking Leftover Army represent.

Instead of unpacking the movie scene by scene, because we’ve all seen it or reading another review that rehashes everything, I’m just going to go on a spoilerific rant on why and what I loved about the movie.

Spoilers coming now. You’ve been warned. Spoiler pussies need not apply.

I really loved the progression of the characters. We open and see Cap has become more of a leader/mentor, Falcon has become more confident in his abilities and Scarlet Witch is obviously learning but understanding the capabilities of her power. Tony is realizing the consequences of his actions, and Vision is learning how to blend in. Now you’d expect this out of an Avengers movie but it’s not necessary for it to be done in a Captain America solo film but the care they took to give each character some added depth was above and beyond.
Cap4
I loved the progression of the Captain America story as well as every other character and the overall MCU storyline. It’s what Age of Ultron tried to do but ended up in a disjointed story that had Thor in a mystic hot spring, Cap having USO nightmares and Hulk needing a secret touch to control the Hulk, I used to call it a handjob but apparently it’s now called a lullaby.

Marvel has been under fire for use of its villains, and rightfully so and I understand people’s frustration with Zemo but I don’t agree with it. I am aware of Zemo’s comic history but not at all familiar with his story. That being said I don’t think this story needed a “big bad”. It was all about internal conflict and ideology conflict, so using Zemo as more of a mastermind and a brilliant one at that. Is he a great MCU villain? No, not yet. He is abundantly serviceable with the potential to be much more but at least they didn’t try to advertise him as something more than he was and at this stage in the game I respect that.
Cap7
Spider-Man and Black Panther were amazing. I however am probably in the minority in saying that they didn’t steal the show. Great set ups, introductions, and showcase of abilities. They look fucking outstanding too. I honestly am so much more excited for those two movies than Doctor Strange or even Guardians 2. I think Ant Man/Giant Man stole the show. I know Giant Man was spoiled by Legos and we half expected it but we all had our dicks blown off by how fucking awesome it was and every one of his jokes made me laugh.
Cap5
That 18 minute or how ever long, what will forever be known as “The Airport Scene” was the best fight scene that I have personally ever seen in cinema. Not a single wasted second, move or line.
Cap6
I don’t know about you but I was expecting maybe a boss super soldier fight with something happening to cause Tony and Bucky to turn on each other and once they showed the 5 other winter soldiers with bullets in their head I was relieved but what the fuck is going to happen now? Zemo is then found in an impenetrable bunker so I think he is going to say the words to reprogram Bucky again and have him go after Iron Man. Nope wrong again. He does something more devastating, shows the tape of Bucky killing Howard and Maria (so close to Martha) and like any man in an armor suit with daddy issues (me included in my very less damaging ways) would do, fucking snaps and causes the true Civil War the title implies.

This is my second favorite MCU movie. Iron Man is #1 for me. It kicked off the MCU, was damn near a flawless movie, I loved the casting of RDJ as Tony when it was announced, it was a spectacle from beginning to end. The rewatchability is off the charts. Civil War could eventually take the number 1 spot but Civil War needs many more viewings before I give it the title but it has a really good chance at taking it.

I was Team Cap going in and leaving but I really felt for Tony and could easily see both sides.

Hope you enjoyed my review hope you let me know what you think.
