If you put Austin Powers, Anchorman, a bit of Mama Mia, and a pinch How Stella Got Her Groove Back in a blender, the resulting concoction is Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar. The colorful and silly buddy comedy was written by Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo who also play the titular roles. Fans of Wiig or Bridesmaids (co-written by Mumolo) need to click that “Rent” button wherever you rent movies NOW. Everything good about the aforementioned films is what Barb and Star is made of.

Barb and Star are best friends who go on a vacation together. Some of the events in the film could pit the two women against each other, but instead shows a healthy relationship between two women amidst the ridiculous antics that happen around them. Wiig and Mumolo’s portrayals of Star and Barb, respectively, are laugh out loud, tears in your eyes hilarious.

Jamie Dornan, probably best known as Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades of Grey films, plays the main male lead. His commitment to the sill nature of Barb and Star wasn 110%. If he is someone you only know as “that Fifty Shades guy”, you will be pleasantly surprised by his comedic performance. Damon Wayans Jr. and Wendy McLendon-Covey have small parts. Watch out for a few other cameos, you absolutely weren’t expecting.

Lionsgate had originally intended for Barb and Star to debut in July 2020, but pushed it a year ahead due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The best thing to happen to this pandemic was Lionsgate’s decision in January to go ahead and release Barb and Star on VOD. It is well worth the $19.99 price tag. I’ll say it again, if you like any of the movies I have mentioned, rent Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar now.
