**SPOILERS**
“ANNA” is a respectable attempt at common plot. A career spy wants out of the life of killing and espionage and uses her formidable talents to turn the tables on the governments who are using her for their own gain.

Sasha Luss stars as Anna who was orphaned as a young child, sent to military school and eventually finds herself living a torturous life with an abusive man. She is approached by a KGB operative Alex Tchenkov (played by Luke Evans), who gives her the option of using her unique talents with the promise of her freedom after 5 years of service. With an offer too good to refuse, she begins her training and career as a highly skilled KGB assassin. With her well-developed cover as a high fashion model, the stage is set for her to remain an undetected assassin. The shots are called by the head of her unit “Olga” (played by Helen Mirren), who is never without a quick comeback.

The obligatory romance develops and her only focus is a life of freedom away from this world of murder, lies and spying. But soon the American government headed by CIA operative Lenny Miller (played by Cillian Murphy) learns of her role and promises her true freedom if she works for them to bring down the KGB. As she works both sides there is no shortage of bad one-liners and unbelievable scenarios but the action is directed well and Luss sells the role. I left the theater wanting to see more from her and am excited to see her career continue to grow.

The movie suffers from an absurd number of time jumps (I counted no less than 6 in the film) and an inconsistent narrative. Too many unnecessary plot twists to usher in sub plots that unfortunately are so predictable that they become a waste of the audience’s time.

PCL Rating: Taste It

Rotten Tomatoes Rating: FRESH 🍅
