Absentia is an Amazon original crime drama shrouded in mystery. It was created by Matthew Cirulnick
and Gaia Violo.
In Season One we meet Emily Byrne, a former FBI Special Agent played by Stana Katic, who had spent
the last six years of her life being held captive by a serial killer. After her rescue she learned that her
husband, Nick, having believed Emily to be dead, had remarried and their young son now looked upon
Nick’s new wife as his mother. In the midst of coming to terms with this, Emily finds herself framed for
murder and must fight to prove her innocence.
In Season Two a terrorist gas attack takes much of the FBI’s attention leaving Emily free to dig into her
mysterious past. As the season progresses Emily learns that the events of her past are far more related
to the present than anyone would’ve imagined.
I loved Absentia Season One. It was full of twists and turns and incredibly well-acted. They were able to
keep the mystery alive until the end of the season and it wrapped up perfectly leaving just enough of
the mystery to keep my interest for a second season.
Season Two follows that formula as well, but twists and changes when necessary as Emily is in a very
different place than when we first found her. She continues to deal with the mental trauma from her
years in captivity and finds a kindred soul in her new partner, Cal Isaac, a former black ops soldier played
by Matthew Le Nevez. Together they investigate a string of murders connected to the gas attack.
Season Two worked really well for me. It has a slightly different tone than the first season, but I
understood the necessity of it; Emily is no longer a fugitive trying to prove her innocence and this is a
natural progression of her character’s story.
However, much like the first season, we are inundated with a mystery lurking behind the scenes. Who is
murdering these seemingly unconnected people? How does it tie in with the terrorist attack? You’ll have
to watch Season Two of Absentia on Amazon to find out!
