Directed by Brian Kirk and written by Adam Mervis and Matthew Michael Carnahan “21 Bridges” tells a story we have seen multiple times. However, this time it is through the lens of “Andre Davis” (played by Chadwick Boseman) a young, successful and “by the book” New York City cop who seeks to fight the same type of criminals who took the life of his late father, also a decorated veteran of the force.
Michael and Ray (played by Stephan James and Taylor Kitsch) attempt to execute what seems to be a routine robbery when things do not go according to plan and they end up taking the lives of multiple New York City police officers. Andre is called in to investigate. He closes down each of the 21 Bridges that lead to and from the island of Manhattan which boxes the suspects in with no safe place to hide. The introduction of seasoned supervisor “Captain McKenna” (played by J.K Simmons) and narcotics detective “Frankie Burns” (played by Sienna Miller) only muddy the waters when cops begin to shoot first and ask questions later.

Audiences will not be surprised when the cops claiming to help Andre turn out to be participants in a drug ring who are seeking to kill any suspect who can implicate them. This fact is not well hidden and as a result the reveal is pretty anticlimactic.
This film is action packed and not for the faint of heart. However, it also uses a paint-by-numbers approach to this tale about corrupt police. The character of “Andre” leads the way as the one upstanding officer pulled into the chaos of a truly corrupt unit. Unfortunately, despite his best efforts Chadwick Boseman’s talent simply cannot turn this film into what it so desperately hopes to be…interesting.
